Run out of fuel on a mountain

The mountain looms closer as we drive further north, and my ears begin to ring. I'll need to drive carefully through the hills and mountains as the gas light has come on, indicating that we're running low on fuel. My roommate appears to be trying to create tension to keep us focused on completing our task while keeping the car running. As we slowly make our way down the mountain with limited fuel, she cries out in relief that we've arrived at the gas station, and I express thanks that we didn't get stuck.
